Belle
7 Yrs Old
15hh
Quarter Horse Mare
Belle is a super sweet natured mare who we were able to rescue from the auction pipeline.
We know from her coggins that she has been sold at two auctions in the last year already.
Though we will never know her full history. this poor girl has been through a lot in her life already.
Her neck has scars from stallion bites and she has been used as a broodmare at least once.
She has spur marks on her sides and her lower lip uncontrollably quivers.
That all being said she is still the kindest mare around.
She is looking for a family who will love on her and show her that not all humans are bad people.
She would make a perfect pleasure horse, trail horse, fox hunter, you name it.
We took her fox hunting in third field and she was perfect the entire time
Everyone commented on how good of a girl she was and how anyone could ride her.
She would happily go for hours on a trail ride, but doesn't seem to have much arena riding experience.
She will go over ditches, through creeks, up and down hills, is okay with horses right behind her.
She is great with dogs and doesn't have a spooky bone in her body.
She would also make a wonderful horse to have at home for your friends and family to ride who are inexperienced
She is a stocky girl who can be ridden by anyone, beginners on up
She is definitely a more whoa than go girl and responds best to gently asking her to go and then releasing when she moves
When she arrived to us she was very shut down and it was easy to tell that someone has spurred her to get her to move
Consequently, if you use too much pressure she will shut down and will not move at all.
Increasing the pressure with a shut down horse just makes them go more internal
As we have been working with her, she has really come out of her shell and there is no need to pressure her into anything.
We went back to basics with her and found that she goes very well in a rope halter or bitless bridle
She will walk trot and canter if just asked gently
She can be ridden English, Western, Bareback, you name it
She is a bit apprehensive about the farrier when we had her trimmed and didn't want to offer up her feet to him.
We sometimes get horses in from auctions that haven't had a lot of hoof handling and she acted this way
She just needed to adjust and get her balance when being trimmed and told that it was okay and we weren't going to hurt her.
We gave her half a tube of Dormosedan gel to have it be a positive experience and to be able to do a good trim on her overgrown hooves.
We don't believe she would always need to be sedated with continued training on how to stand while being trimmed and gains more trust with her new family.
She stands perfectly still when tied in cross ties or straight tied
She doesn't move when being groomed, sprayed with sprays, brushed, tacked, and bathed.
She has never even hinted at doing anything mean, no kicking, bucking, biting, rearing, bolting, etc.
She has had one heat cycle while she has been here and her personality did not change at all.
She trailers well and loaded and unloaded perfectly for us in the dark
Our veterinarian believes that she likely had West Nile Virus at one point in her life which has caused the lip quivering.
This will likely never go away and is an artifact of the virus, but it does not affect her eating, ability to drink, or in any other way.
She is has no injuries and does not need any supplements or medications.
She lives out on pasture 24/7 with geldings, mares, mini horses, a foal and is about the middle of the pack
She was a little hard to catch the first few days but after we gave her treats each time, she now walks up to us to bring her in
She can also be stalled and has no stable vices.
She is up to date on her 6-way Vaccinations, Coggins, deworming, and barefoot trim
We hope this sweet girl can find a family that loves her and we are so glad we were able to rescue her from the auction pipeline!
