Sire is Oxbow!
2023 RRP Eligible!
Oxpensive - or as we call him Benjamin, has had a rough start in life.
He comes from fantastic bloodlines with his sire being Oxbow who is still at stud at Calumet Farm, KY and has a 2022 stud fee of $7,500
Unfortunately, he was less than stellar at the track and only raced twice and retired in Nov 2021 with a fracture left medial sesamoid.
Over the next year his history is a little unknown but we believe he was rehabbed for the injury and then ended up in the wrong hands.
Someone tried to race him again as he came to us with racing plates on and then he was dumped at the Stroud Oklahoma Kill Pen.
We were able to step in and rescue him and ensure he never ends up in a place like that again.
When he arrived to us he was a 2.5 body condition score and had a mild colic the first few days.
Luckily he powered through and is steadily gaining weight, already up to a 3 body condition score.
Our veterinary team did a complete physical and lameness evaluation on him along with flexions and X-rays.
His physical exam was perfect and without flexions he shows no signs of lameness.
Upon flexing the left front fetlock he is lame and upon further investigation by X-rays you can see why.
His left front medial sesamoid bone is in 3-4 pieces.
By some miracle he is sound if it is not stressed and is also sound under saddle walk, trot, and canter.
Consequently, Benny needs a home where he will be mainly a pleasure riding horse and flat riding only.
We believe jumping could cause him discomfort, but so long as the joint is not stressed he can go on to be a lovely flat riding horse.
The joint will continue to re-model over the next few years and as he continues to grow.
We consulted with a surgeon at MSU and they agreed that he is not a surgical candidate for pinning as it could actually cause him more discomfort at this point or make him lame.
They did recommend using Iconoclast orthopedic or SMB style boots as those will give better support to the sesamoid bones and fetlock while riding.
Now for the fun part, he is the calmest baby 4 year old OTTB I have ever been around.
He is an absolute gem to interact with, has zero vices, no bad habits, and is beginner friendly.
Trailer loading he does well with gentle encouragement, but we think with more practice he will hop right in. He has had a lot of life changes in the last year, so we think he's not super fond of loading right now.
He stands PERFECTLY to be groomed and tacked, picks up all four feet easily, and accepts the bit well.
Leads perfectly and is not herd bound at all and has zero stable vices. He can be stalled or in a pasture with friends.
He is very submissive and likes to take morning naps during sunrise. He will whinny to you as you come to his paddock.
Free lunges really well and will walk trot and canter when asked but also loves to be around people
Wasn't familiar with treats when he arrived but is starting to really like those and carrots.
Under saddle he does not need to be lunged before being ridden and we just hopped right on.
Stood better than my personal horses for mounting and walked off calmly on a loose rein.
Not a spooky bone in his body, nothing seems to bother him at all.
Great around dogs and actually really likes interacting and nuzzling them.
He is wonderful around kids and lets my 1 year old pet him.
He can be ridden English, Western, you name it and he will be a perfect gentleman.
He has only been ridden at the track so needs some training mainly on steering in an arena but did better and better with every loop.
We think he would make a fantastic hunter under saddle, trail horse, pleasure horse, dressage horse, western dressage, you name it!
He has three lovely floaty gaits and will go when asked with some gentle encouragement, but we wouldn't call him more whoa than go, more of a steady eddy this one!
He still needs to gain some more weight and muscling but he is gaining very well now.
We can't say enough good things about him as far as under saddle he is beginner friendly and I'd be totally comfortable putting anyone on him or having anyone brush and tack him.
He may gain a little more energy when he's more in shape but as for now he's a very chill bean.
He is currently shod but has good feet so you could try barefoot.
He is up to date on his coggins, vaccines, worming, floating, and farrier care.
He is not on any supplements or maintenance, besides a weight gaining diet for now.
He would be a FANTASTIC RRP horse as he's not going to get excited by the show grounds or the atmosphere in Kentucky.
Someone will be lucky to call this boy there's and we are so glad we could save him from the slaughter pipeline.
Adoption fee: $2,500
