Belgian Mare
Big Belgian Blossom is the sweetest mare around!
She has that gentle giant personality and doesn't have a mean bone in her body.
We were luckily able to intercept her before he entered the auction pipeline
She was an Amish work horse in his previous life and used for driving and riding
She was also used as a broodmare.
She is calm and quiet and beginner friendly and not mareish at all
She loaded perfectly in the trailer, ties, and stands and waits patiently
She is easy to catch in the field and is great to give vaccines and wormer to.
She is good about picking up his front feet, and improving each day with her hinds
She was likely shod in shoeing stocks so learning to pick up their feet is something we have to train most Belgians on.
When she arrived we put her on our regular grain feeding regimen and this made her front feet sore
Often broodmares can have a laminitic episode while pregnant and then be sensitive to sugar even when they aren't in foal
This is the case for Blossom and she would do best on a low sugar/ low carb diet.
We are currently feeding her:
Unlimited grass hay
2 lbs of alfafa pellets (soaked)
4 oz of Cocosoya oil fat supplement for weight gain
Farrier's Formula Double Strength hoof supplement
Trace minerals
And Bute-less anti inflammatory supplement
She has been doing well on this diet along with keeping her off of spring grasses and on a dry lot and stalled at night.
She will need to have this diet maintained to keep her feeling comfortable.
She does well in her stall and has no stable vices.
She can be turned out with geldings and mares and is not bossy. She is about the middle of the pack.
She stands to be groomed and tacked and doesn't move when you spray her with sprays
She is great around dogs and isn't phased by them at all
She is very easy to bridle and saddle and just stands there happily for you.
She is not spooky in the slightest.
Anyone could ride this girl from kids, beginners, to your grandma who's never ridden a horse
She would do best with a low impact riding home and would be the perfect trail mount
She really seems to brighten up and enjoy being outside of the arena exploring!
She might try to stop and eat the tasty grass a few times but if you just ask her to continue she politely responds
She is up to date on wormer, coggins, and vaccinations.
She is currently scheduled to have her teeth floated and feet trimmed and shoes removed on 04/21
